I had this moment of clarity today while I was sitting at my sister's house for another fun-filled morning of babysitting the contractors as they worked on the floor. As much complaining as I've been doing about the house sitting recently, when else do I have an excuse to do nothing but sit and read and write. Yes, I can do it at home, but there's always a nagging voice in the back of my head detailing things that I could be doing around the house. You know, like, vacuuming. Or something. So this house sitting is really an excuse for me to take a vacation from my vacation. Awesome.

Yeah. So I didn't write on my story today. However ...
Book #26 - Bitten (Women of the Otherworld #1) by Kelley Armstrong - This was the book that singlehandedly reignited the spark of interest I had in werewolf books. It also made me go from tolerating first person narratives to embracing them with a whole-heartedness that's nearly embarrassing. I loved Elena's story from the first word. I was drawn in and emotionally wrung out by how much I wanted her to get her happily ever after. As the only female werewolf, Elena Michaels is something of a precious commodity. She holds an esteemed position in the Pack, has a almost-psychotic sometimes-boyfriend packmate who both knows and accepts what she is and she's trying to live a normal in the human world (complete with a job and long-time boyfriend who has no idea that she turns into a wolf upon occasion). Yeah. Her life is a little complicated. When the Pack Alpha calls her home, Elena has to reconcile the two sides of her nature before the secrets of the Pack are revealed. Seriously, one of my favorite werewolf books. It's dense, well-written, and emotionally wrenching.

-and-

Book #27 - Stolen (Women of the Otherworld #2) by Kelley Armstrong - Picking up roughly a year after Bitten, Elena and Clay have found a balance with each other and they're trying hard to make it work. Following up on a lead which could reveal the secret of the werewolves, Elena comes into contact with two witches who tell her more than she ever imagined regarding other Supernatural races (something the Pack barely knew existed). Elena's investigation leads her to a group of people who kidnap and study Supernaturals to try to learn what makes them different. Now, this book isn't quite as insanely captivating as the first, but it's still good. It moves quickly and it helps define Elena's personality and morals a bit more. Plus, it introduces a whole new level of intrigue by bringing in witches, shamans, demons, and half-demons.

I'm so glad I decided to re-read this series. I love love love those werewolves!

Word has come down from the sis that I'm not needed tomorrow. However, I'll be there on Wednesday for the installing of the new carpet. *sigh* That means that I have to change my hair appointment. Boo. Ehh, not a big deal.

I just realized that it's been a year since my official last day at the bank. Whoa. A year. Nice. It's been the best damn year of my life. I feel like a real person again. The sad news is that it's starting to sink in that I'm probably going to have to start looking for a job soon. Part of me is still rebelling against the thought, but part of me is trying to be a big girl and take it in stride. Even if (fine, when!) I find a job, I'm going to have a long term goal of working for myself. Whether it's as a writer or whatever. It's what I want. I think I could be a full-time blogger. Yes? Yes. Seriously, though, I still want to write like WHOA! Even on the days that the muse is fighting me tooth and nail I want to be a writer.

So now I have a goal.

Excellent.

Done now. I have things to do. Or something.

My lovely friends [livejournal.com profile] kimbrchick and [livejournal.com profile] jenahville stopped by today. And being the awesome peeps that they are, we watched episodes of Supernatural. Not part of my marathon, mind you, just random episdoes that caught our fancy. For those that are wondering ... No Exit (JO!), The Usual Suspects, Tall Tales, Ghostfacers, and Bad Day at Black Rock. We were kinda going for humorous eps. Yeah, No Exit doesn't have so much of the funny but it does have Jo and we like Jo.

So, we watched the Winchester boys today and I'll continue my marathon in a bit (once Cole finishes some of his shows on the DVR). Seriously, despite the heat (yuck!) this was a GREAT weekend. Supernatural to the left and Supernatural to the right! Woot!

I also finished my 100th book.
Book #100 - The Haunted Bridge by Carolyn Keene - A decent book (much better than #100 form last year, if memory serves) that was standard Nancy Drew fare. Nancy and her friends solve the mystery of the haunted bridge while vacationing. Nancy also wins a golf tournament. And helps her father with one of his cases. And helps a young woman prove that she isn't a thief. Yep, Nancy still has it!

Have I mentioned at any point that Cole's going to be in Pennsylvania for a week? Well, he is. There's a wedding on his dad's side of the family that he's going to. I'll be kid-less for an entire week. Boo. I mean, it's nice the first day or so and then it's ... not. It's kinda boring. Who will I get to help with their homework? Who will I make dinner for in the evening? Me. That's who. Yep, I'm going to miss the boy.

I think I'm done now.

I think my darling boy is all set for school tomorrow. His lunch has been made. His backpack is packed with LOTS of school-related goodies. His clothes have been picked out. We went by the school today so I could show him where his classroom is. Normally, we'd just go find out where he had to line up on the playground, but since he does safety patrol in the morning (he holds the stop sign for kids to cross the street) he won't be lining up with the rest of the class. He goes straight to class after dropping off all his safety gear. So. I think he's ready.

I know I am. I'm so tired of how much Hailey and Cole have been fighting lately. So.Tired.Of.It.

Okay. I'm going to watch Total Recall with the boy. One last summer movie.

Where did August come from? Huh.

Okay. I just made the best dinner. Roasted veggies from my Aunt's garden (green beans and zucchini, tomatoes from our garden and mushrooms) and noodles. It doesn't sound like it would be a good combo, but it really was. Yum!

Now I have old school Scooby-Doo on behind me. Word!

We're having a lazy weekend around here. Cole spent the night at his dad's last night and we lazed around today. I'm finishing up my book. We watched a little TV. All in all, a good time. I was telling my grandma that I loved having my aunt and uncle down from Washington, but I felt like we didn't have a moment to slow down last weekend. It was all swimming and going out to eat and doing something continuously. I'm not cut out for that. I need long, uninterrupted stretches where I can nap and unwind.

Lovely.

I promised myself that I would put up the monthly (or two monthly) wrap-up up at [livejournal.com profile] blabapalooza. I'm off to do that now.

I stayed up too late last night. I had a hard time waking up this morning. Boo. But I did finish my book.

Book #60 - Paths not Taken by Simon R. Green - 5th in the Nightside series. I really like how things that were set up in the first book are coming around and being addressed now. Defining moments are happening - Things that shaped the Nightside and John Taylor and his mother are in the middle of all of it. That sort of plotting makes my writer's heart sing. So, John goes back to the beginnings of the Nightside to see why it was created. Mayhem happens between here and there.

Cole's not feeling great this morning. He took a bath (of his own accord!) and now he's lounging around. It's foggy and murky outside. My favorite type of weather. I think we're going to have a slow and easy day inside. I might go to the library. Hailey got in trouble last night for not listening so she can't go with me. It's the ultimate punishment - no library time! Woe! What can I say? She loves the library.

Bailey's watching Animal Planet right now. She loves the dogs on it. Hilarious! Sometimes she barks at them. It's the funniest thing. She has also chewed up a toy I bought her. Completely destroyed it. It's in pieces with all the stuffing pulled out. Nice.

Wow, the kids are (momentarily) not trying to kill one another. I almost don't know what to do. School starts in 3 weeks and it's about time. How did my mom handle it when my sisters and I were out of school for nearly 3 months back in the day? Plus, she did at-home daycare for other kids. We'd be crawling with kids left and right. How? How did she handle it? She must be acres more patient than I am.

Hmm. I think that's all I have to say.

Just so I don't forget ...
Book #58 - Dead Man's Folly by Agatha Christie - Another request by [livejournal.com profile] oddmonster and we all know that I must bow down before her requests. For once I figured out parts of the mystery before the big reveal. Of course that does mean that I got parts of it wrong. Look, no one's perfect. I got part of it. I really liked this one. It baffled Poirot and it was sufficiently twisty enough to satisfy my mystery craving. Without giving anything away, the only reason I got any sort of inkling as to where this one was going was the use of a certain word/phrase that kept popping up. It made me go Hmmm. And then I started thinking.

This has been a crazy busy weekend. With my aunt and uncle in town we spent the bulk of our time out and about. We spent Friday at my grandma's. Swimming, eating, visiting. We spent Saturday in Gilroy at my other uncle's house with everyone and his menagerie of animals. FYI, the Gilroy Garlic Festival was this weekend. There were a lot of cars heading down that way. Anyway. Bailey loved having an entire backyard (which is HUGE) to run around in. Today we went back up to my grandma's for more swimming and lunch at the clubhouse.

I'm exhausted.

Everything's back to normal tomorrow. All the stray relatives are heading home and the kids and I will be back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Speaking of the kids, I picked up school supplies for Cole today. Paper, notebooks, pencils, pens ... the works. It's crazy to think that in a little over 3 weeks they're back to school and I can put myself on a serious writing schedule. I'm looking forward to it. That means that I'll start up my movie reviews again. Simply because I'll be watching movies that aren't all family movies. Or animated movies. Or movies with talking dogs in them. This is a very exciting moment in my life.

Okay. back to my book now.
Later.

I've been marathoning Star Trek Enterprise over the last week or so. However, I had to seriously slow down on the number of episodes I was going through so my season 1 dl could catch up. Fortunately, I have all eps now and can continue with my hardcore marathon. Word.

Random Disney stuff that I have to share: Heather, Hailey, Amber and Phil are in Orlando doing a whirlwind tour of all the Disney World ... lands ... or whatever you call them. So, today they were standing in line to get into Epcot and some officials came over to them, looked at Hailey in her cute Tinkerbell hat and made the four of them the VIP Family of the Day. Isn't that just neat? They got to get into the park early and take pictures with all the characters and go on some of the rides before the park opened. They also got VIP seating for the fireworks and some random fast passes.

Dudes. Stuff like that always happens to Amber. She shows up places and people want to give her things. I told Cole that next time we go to Disneyland we're taking her with us. Free stuff, you can't hide from me!!!

Okay. Time to get back to STE!

I get to get up at 5 tomorrow morning to take Hailey and Heather to the airport. They're heading out to Florida to go to Disney World. According to Amber and Phil (who are already there) it's ridiculously hot. Grossly hot. On the other hand, it's supposed to hit upwards of 100F Saturday and Sunday here. Yikes. That's hot. We've already discussed that the air will be on. There's no going back on that. It's a done deal.

I have a brand new Zombie book waiting for my to fulfill it's purpose. I'm also totally craving some of the jam my mom and I made the other day. Maybe I'll have some. Right this moment.

Cole has just been invited to spend a couple of days in Tahoe. Starting tomorrow. *blink* Didn't he just get back from time away from me? Darn kids today with all their socializing and being friendly and not shutting themselves into their houses.

That means that tomorrow after Cole leaves I'll have no kids here! NO KIDS! Hailey's spending the night at her other grandma's house and doing fun stuff with them all day tomorrow. I think that means that I can do whatever I want. Within reason. I still have to make sure the dog takes walkies and stuff. I don't want any messes on the floor.

Speaking of which, we took Bailey to the dog park today and she had the best time. Sometimes when she runs, she looks like a wild wolverine. It cracks me up. Anyway, she ran like a little possessed ball of black fur. It was crazy funny. We did have to give her a bath after her fun simply because she was rolling around in the dirt until she was covered in it. I draw the line at letting the dog sleep on my bed covered in dirt that's been pooped on.

I'm pretty much tapped at this point.

Oh crap. I'm tired. If it's 7 here, it has to be later somewhere else. Using this logic it's not too early to go to bed. Except that I have to take the dog out in about 2 hours. I guess it could be a nap. Who am I kidding, like I'd wake up from that!

Why am I so tired? Cole had his last flag football game of the season. Sitting in the sun always makes me sleepy. Sadly, after an awesome season (6 wins, 1 loss, 3 ties), they lost both games in the playoffs. Boo. But they played really well. Cole had a great catch that he ran in for the point after and one that he intercepted to stop the other team from scoring. Overall, I think he had a really good time playing and it wasn't a terrible schedule (a 45 minute practice every Sunday followed by 2 30 minute games). I'd be willing to give this sport another watch. I like it when my kid gets excited about running around.

Tomorrow is going to be a lazy first day of summer. The library is closed so we can't get our library cards until Tuesday. The cupcake shop is closed so we can't get cupcakes until Tuesday. That leaves... vacuuming the garage? Cleaning out my car? Sleeping in? (until at least 6:30!!!!) Reading a book? Watching a movie? Keeping the kids from killing one another? All of the above? No, that's too much stuff for one day. Maybe I'll string it out over a couple of days. I also may have been talked into seeing Star Trek again. May have. No, I was talked into it. I just have to figure out when.

That's about all I have to say.

It's official. The kids are out of school for the summer. Awesome! Cole made gold honor roll for getting straight A's! Yay!. He also got an award for making the honor roll every trimester! Double yay!

I'm working my way through the original Star Trek movies. I'm having a really good time so far. Although I am skipping around, so that may have something to do with it.

Question: From most favorite to least, how would you rate the original six Star Trek movies? I'd say ... Wrath of Khan (2), The Voyage Home (4), The Undiscovered Country (6), The Motion Picture (1), Search for Spock (3), and The Final Frontier (5). However, all those are trumped by the newest incarnation. STAR TREK 2009! Woot!

Cole should be home any minute from dinner with his dad.

I had my first ever adventure at Ikea today. [livejournal.com profile] iron_knife had been planning on going and I asked if I could tag along. I have two words for you ... Swedish Meatballs. They were the highlight of the freaking DAY for me. All delicious and meaty. Yum! I desperately wanted to get a second plate. I'm pretty sure I would have exploded if I had eaten it, but it would have been worth it. Oh, it would have.

I also looked at desks. My current desk is a mere 32 inches wide. (Backstory ... I had a very small space at my old house to fit the desk into and I had to work with what I had.) I have enough room now to get a 60" one. The thought of being able to put all my stuff away is empowering. I feel stronger just thinking about it. So I'm looking. Not buying yet, but definitely looking.

In other news ... tomorrow is the last day of school for the kiddies. Cole wrote a really nice thank you letter to his teacher. It was sweet. The downside to this is that the kids are already driving me crazy and summer hasn't even started yet. Oh, noes! I yelled at Cole today because he tore apart my closet looking for something and just left it. Wha??? No. Cleaning up is now mandatory. So say we all.

I'm trying to watch the original Star Trek movies but something is wrong with my disc. Annoying.

I'm out.

I just found out via Felicia Day @ Twitter that David Eddings passed away today. *sigh* It makes me want to re-read the Belgariad and Mallorean series. Even though I read both series last year.

On a happier subject, Hailey had her Kindergarten graduation today. It was really cute. They performed all the songs that they had learned throughout the year. Hailey was a witch in a hat in one of the songs. HILARIOUS!

Two more days of school for the kiddies and then I'm stuck with them the entire summer. Woe!

I did almost nothing on my list today. Nothing. Although I do consider cleaning out Cole's backpack to be a major accomplishment. It's just that it wasn't on the list. My GODS! Do you know how much stuff the kids bring home at the end of the year? Cole's backpack weighed approximately 1700 pounds. It was heavy.

In other news, I've watched First Contact, Insurrection and part of Nemesis since seeing the most AWESOME Star Trek.

I'm off.

I had a kinda weird day. Cole decided not to go with his dad to Carmel which meant that I wasn't going to be able to see Star Trek as I had planned. I still don't know why Cole refuses to see it, but he does. Anyway. I asked Cole if he wanted to see Terminator Salvation and he was all gung-ho about it. So, we drafted [livejournal.com profile] iron_knife into going with us and jaunted off to the theater. I really liked the movie, but Cole said that they could have done it better. I stand by the fact that I like it. I have a itty-bitty crush on Sam Worthington now and would gladly watch him again. Immediately. Also, that Christian Bale guy was pretty good. :P

Oh, and just to be clear, I did see the plot holes that popped up here and there and the things that happened that were just silly (umm ... where did the dry wood for the fire come from after the DRIVING rain? Yeah.) and I was still highly entertained by it. Plus, it moves my Terminator movies forward into a time of broken cities and you should know by now that I LOVE broken cities.

When I got home from the movies I was tiiiirrrrred and took a nap that I couldn't wake up from. It was awesome. Then Cole grilled the two of us some hot dogs (For real! He was turning those bad boys like it was going out of style!) and I took the dog for a walk.

All in all, it was a good day.

I'm thinking I'm still going to try to squeeze in a viewing of Star Trek before the kiddies are out of school next week. [livejournal.com profile] iron_knife, you game?

I'm done.

Umm ...

Book #39 - Sail by James Patterson - My mom and my sister raved about this book. Raved about it. So I was all, okay! I'll read it! I'm not saying the book was bad, but it didn't live up the expectations I was given. As with all James Patterson books, there was death. There was intrigue. There was double-crossing. To be honest, although I enjoyed the book as a light read (3-4 hours, tops!), it didn't hold a candle to several of the really good books I've read lately. Namely, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and The Giver. Even Breaking Dawn - and that was more in the line of pure entertainment and some chaste sex. So, there.

Okay. I have this idea that I want to implement on my Blu-Ray web pages but I keep getting distracted by how time-consuming I think it will be. Which is stupid because I have nothing but time right now. Not so much when the kids are out of school at the end of next week. I should really take advantage of this. And yet... I don't. Lame.

I'm going to go harass Hailey now. :)

I'm sending kisses [livejournal.com profile] oddmonster's way ...

Book #37 - The Giver by Lois Lowry - This book was recommended to me by my bro-in-law. It's one of their 5th grade reading books and he told me that I had to read it. So I did. Wow. The writing is incredibly dynamic. It pulls you in from nearly the first word. And it doesn't stop. My biggest complaint is that I wanted to know more about this world that Lois Lowry had envisioned. There wasn't enough. More pages. More description. More, more, more. I highly recommend this book.

-and-

Book #38 - Breaking Dawn (Twilight, #4) by Stephanie Meyer - It took me forever to finally start this book. I was daunted by the sheer number of pages. I was worried that all those deeply negative reviews I constantly hear about Stephanie Meyer's writing would be true. However. Once I got past the mushy first 200 pages and past the mental block of one particular cliche that was thrown in there, the book was Gooooood. Like, really good. I loved the section of the book told from Jacob's perspective. I loved the idea of a gathering of vampires. I loved the mental shift the werewolf pack had to make in regards to the vampire clan. It all just worked for me. Sure, it took me 6 months to finally pick up the book and start reading it and another 2 1/2 months to get past that above mentioned first 200 pages (not true, exactly. I read the pages quickly then I put the book down and didn't pick it up again for 2 1/2 months), but this book is done. And I would read it again. All 750 pages of it. *nods*

I didn't just read today. Our dog bolted out of the house when my grandma stopped by and I had to chase her down the street. OMG! I thought I was going to die. It was awful. I don't understand why people enjoy running. I just don't get it. I hate it. I am not a runner. Every part of my body hurts after. Every part. Legs. Chest. No, not my lungs or anything, my chest! Arms. I'm so fair that I turn bright red and look ridiculous. Uggh. No more running. Give me yoga any day over running. Please!

Cole and I had a long talk today about what he's going to be doing this summer. Or not doing. Mainly, he not going to be getting into any more fights with Hailey. No more pinching. No more pushing. No more being mean to one another. I'm well aware that the fighting isn't one sided. Hailey instigates it as much as Cole. But it's going to stop. Starting now. I've already told both of them that they'd be losing their DS games first, followed by TV and anything else I could think of. Yeah, I'm hardcore!

Okay. I babbled a lot. And I still don't have my new keyboard. I really need that. Anyway. Later!

Hey! I just drank a big, fat mug of coffee. I'm not planning on being up all night! I swear it! Ahahahahahaha! I want to see Star Trek but Cole's leaning toward Wolverine. I want to see Wolverine, but not now. Maybe when it comes out on DVD. ST, however ... Word. I'm not even sure why I'm thinking about this RIGHT NOW. Weird.

I helped out in Cole's classroom this morning for Pioneer Day. I was the serving wench in the saloon. That might not sound kid friendly, but it was. The kids played 21 and whenever they won they got a bead. They could bring the bead to me (the serving wench) for root beer and pretzels. I was impressed that it was making the kids add in their heads quickly to see what their cards added up to. Hailey helped me pass out the pretzels.

I was fiddling with my bookcase again. I've been wanting to pull my snow globes out of storage and get them put up, but I wasn't quite sure where. Since I'm going through my DVDs and getting rid of some of them, it seemed like a perfect time to reorganize my bookcase, which means that I have room to put them out. That made sense in my head. It also made sense while I was doing it. Anyway. It looks good. As a plus, I have wiggle room for when I buy more books. Shift books a-e to the right, move snow globe up one level and there's plenty of room for NEW BOOKS! Yay!

In other news ... no, wait. There is no other news. Someone (namely [livejournal.com profile] iron_knife) doesn't return messages and I don't want to seem like too crazy a stalker so I only left one. *ahem* Hope you're doing fine and haven't been abducted by aliens. Again. If you have, I hope they don't probe too deeply. Or remove any organs. That's never fun.

The kids are out of school the beginning of June. At first I was going to put Cole into part-time daycare so he wouldn't get burnt out by staying home with me (I HATE IT when he says he's bored all the time) but I just can't justify to myself spending the money when I'm home anyway. So, I'm compiling a list of places to go and things to do that cost little to no money. I think we're going to be spending a lot of time walking the dog and swimming at the pool. I'm also looking into places we can go for easy day hikes that are close by. My next task is to see if the library has any reading days or fun activities that we can get involved in. Oh, and getting library cards for all of us. I haven't got around to that since we moved. Oops.

Okay. I think I can go start Fringe now. Hopefully I'll be able to skip past most of the commercials. And not listen to any American Idol.

Later!

I've cramped up my fingers looking at YouTube movie trailers. I'd like to say that my day was more productive/involved doing more than that, but I'd be lying. This is what happens when the kids are on Spring Break. It throws my entire schedule off. Yes, I have a schedule. And yes, it can be completely thrown off. It sucks.

I have to write 10 articles that are due by Friday. Friday in the UK. That means that I need to send them up before Friday. Because if I don't I know I'll end up waiting too late and then they'll be late. Have I started the articles yet? No. But they're all short, so I'm none too concerned on that point. I'm more concerned about turning them in late. *blink, blink*

The dog's conked out in the middle of my bed. I wonder where I'm going to sleep. Just kidding. I know that I can totally move her over an inch or two to the right.

Have you ever read a book that was good but it ends up being very, very different from what you thought it would be? That's happening to me with my current book. I like it ... it's just not what I originally thought.

Okay. I have more shows to catch up on. I must continue. I must.

ETA: Book #28 - Incantation by Alice Hoffman - Yeah. This is the book that I thought was about something else. I thought it was about a family of witches that were hiding their true selves. Well, I was close, I guess. You know, if you substitute "Jews" for "witches". I usually don't read books that center on religion. However, this was a rather fascinating read. Set during the Spanish Inquisition, it's the story of a family who pretends for generations to be Christians to escape persecution. Eventually, they are betrayed by people they had thought were their friends. Some of the family are killed for their beliefs and some flee. This book was very lyrical. There's very little dialogue and instead of using quotation marks Alice Hoffman italicizes what little there is. Honestly, it made the book ebb and flow like waves in a pond. Once again, not the type of book I would normally read, but I'm glad I picked it up.

So, my next book is going to be Season of the Witch. I'm fairly certain it will really be about witches. *nods*

If you can believe this, I've cleaned my bathroom twice in the last 4 days. Yeah. I never do that. But I have to test out the cleaning products I'm making and it just seems easy to test it out on my bathroom. you know, because it's RIGHT THERE. So, I have a super clean bathroom.

Randomly, H is planning a trip to Disneyworld at the end of June/beginning of July. I've decided to pass on that trip. Partially because I'm not technically working at the moment and hence am not making any money and partially because OMG! HOW FREAKING HOT IS IT GOING TO BE??? I'm thinking of going to Disneyland in December when Cole's on vacation. That sounds so much more refreshing.

I think I might make cinnamon rolls tomorrow. I have the ingredients. I have the time. I can do it.

Where the hell is all the rain I was promised? Huh? I as expecting buckets and I only got a smattering. Not cool. Don't tease me by telling me it's going to rain endlessly and then NOT DELIVER! I love the rain. I love the sound of it. I love how the world smells after it. Don't tell me I'm going to have to hunker down and batten down the hatches if it's not going to happen!

I will say that they're predicting rain through Thursday (at least), so I'll still have my chance for buckets.

I did nothing today. True story. I watched nothing but cartoon-type movies and episodes of Psych. I don't even feel up to reviewing at the moment. Mostly that's because my brain is turning to mush. Not mush exactly. Something vaguely mush-like but with a light citrus-y smell.

I'm going to read now. I guess I should read at least one book in February. Especially since I've been off the ENTIRE MONTH.

That was liberating to write.
Later!
