So, the reason I made a 50 year old woman cry ...
Not so long ago one of my tellers (I'll call her ... Usha) came up to me and informed me that she needed August 4-9 off. Mind you, she didn't ask, she told. This is already not the way to start with me. So, I tell her that I had already given one of the other tellers the 8th and 9th off. She gets all blustery (like a good wind) and tells me that she's already bought her plane tickets and she can't get a refund. Being the nice person I am I tell her to write down the days she needs off and I'll see what I can do. Cut to last week when I'm frantically trying to finish up the schedule for next week. I look at Usha's note and it says that she needs the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, & 9th off. Okay. I schedule according to this note. Yesterday, Usha comes up to me and tells me that I scheduled her on some of the days she had asked for off. I start to tell her that I had scheduled her according to the note she left me. It went something like this ...
me-"You asked for the 3rd and 4th off and ..."
Usha-"No, I didn't."
me-"Yes, you did."
Usha-"No, I didn't."
me-"Usha. Stop arguing with me. I have your note right here." I pull it out and show her the dates she had written down. "I scheduled you according to what you wrote."
Usha-Well, I can't work the 5th and 6th. I'm out of town."
me-"And I'm supposed to know this because ...?
Usha-"Well, I told you about it."
me-"And you wrote down that you only needed the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, & 9th off. How am I supposed to know that you also need the 5th and 6th if you don't write it down for me?"
Usha-"But I told you. It seems that lately you're always mad at me."
me-"I'm not mad. Can you understand how frustrated it makes me when I have to continually re-do the schedule?"
Usha *tearing up*-"Well, I told you a long time ago that I neede those days off."
me-"Well, I had already given the 8th and 9th to one of the other tellers. She asked before you did."
Usha-"But I asked a long time ago."
me-"She asked first."
Usha-"But I asked a long time ago."
me-"I understand that. She asked before you did. If you had asked before she did, you and I wouldn't be having this conversation."
Usha-"Well ...I asked a long time ago."
me-"Actually, you didn't ask. You told me that you needed those days off. And I told you that I had already given someone else some of those days and you didn't give me any option except to give you what you wanted. Imagine the position that puts me in."
Usha-"But..."
At this point I got tired of talking to a brick wall and told her that I would see what I could do.
Sometimes I hate being a manager.
Anyway. That's nearly word for word. Can you see what I have to deal with nearly every day. It's a brick wall, I tell you. A brick wall.
On a much happier note ... Stargates and BSG tonight! Whoo-hoo!
