Happy Mother's Day to all you Moms out there!
We went to my sister's house for some pulled pork sandwiches. Delicious! Cole brought his Wii and my sisters were playing Super Mario Bros. 3. I decided to be a generous mom and get him some Wii points so he could download a few new games. I think he made some good gaming choices.
Uggh. I'm so tired I can hardly see straight. This is what happens when I become enraptured by a book and stay up waaaay too late reading. Right, book.
Book #33 - In the Woods by Tana French - Oh, where to start. I was captivated by this blurb on the back of the book enough to buy it.
That hauled me in. I wanted to know how that child got to that point. How did he come to be standing in bloody sneakers? How did his mates disappear? Why?
So, I picked up the book and started reading. The storyline follows two separate crimes, the above mentioned one that took place in 1984 and the murder of a 12-year old girl that takes place in 2004. 20 years separate the crimes, yet they seem to be linked. Our main character is Detective Rob Ryan, the boy found in the woods 20 years before. He tries to reconstruct his memories of the day his friends disappeared while trying to solve the murder of the girl.
In a lot of ways I don't know what to think about this book. It's well written. It's captivating. You want to know what happens. The characters can be a little bone-headed sometimes, but they're flawed enough that you like them. However. However, the mystery that drew me in in the first place is never fully explained. Sure, a lot of mysteries/crimes are never solved, but ... I wanted closure. I wanted to KNOW.
From the looks of things this is the first in a series. I'm hoping that means that this mystery will be re-addressed in a later book. I'd keep reading for that. Because I want to KNOW.
