Okay. Seriously. This is the most ridiculous thing I've read recently. There's a 99.7% chance that California will be hit by a (more than likely) big quake in the next 30 years? Please. That's like saying that my niece "might" get excited when she hears the ice cream man coming. Yeah, there are going to be quakes. They happen in California. I don't need a news story to tell me there's a high probability of a big one in the next 30 years.

I think my favorite part of the article is:
Knowing the likelihood of a strong earthquake is the first step in allowing scientists to draw up hazard maps that show the potential severity of ground shaking in an area.

Umm. The first step is knowing that there might be a quake? Dudes! It's California. Quakes happen. Now go earn that paycheck and create some disaster plans.

I'll freely admit that it's late and I might be blowing this out of proportion but ... IT'S CALIFORNIA! QUAKES HAPPEN!!

I'm done now.

That's pretty freaking funny. I don't think you need to be a scientist to make that prediction, just a Californian. ;)

Exactly!

I had a similar reaction. I will only be impressed when they can predict an earthquake just mere days away from when it is happening.
But saying it will happen in the next 30 years is like saying Florida will get hit by a damaging hurricane in the next 5 years.

Exactly. I will say that your example was much better than mine. :)
