Every other year (excluding the first 4 years for a new car) we have to go and have the exhaust emmissions checked. If they're below the standards that California sets down, we pass the smog check. If you don't pass, you have to get whatever's causing the bad exhaust fixed before you can get your registration stickers. Annoying in some ways, but with all the cars on the road here it makes a lot of sense.
Our renewal time is decided by when you originally purchase the car. I bought mine at the end of February/beginning of March in 2001. Therefore, my renewal comes up in March.
